Hearing aids
Hearing Aids in Great Neck, NY
Chosen around your hearing and the rooms you actually struggle in — then programmed, verified and adjusted over time by the audiologist who tested you.
A hearing aid is a prescriptive device
It is easy to think of hearing aids as consumer electronics — pick a model, pick a price, put them in. In practice they behave much more like eyeglasses. The same device can be right for one person and wrong for another, and what makes the difference is the prescription behind it.
That prescription comes from your audiogram: how much hearing has changed, at which pitches, in which ear, and how clearly you understand speech. Two people with a similar-looking hearing loss can need meaningfully different amplification, and can get very different results from identical hardware set differently.
Where we start
With a comprehensive hearing evaluation. Without one, any device recommendation is guesswork. If you have had testing elsewhere recently, bring the results and we will review them with you.
What the consultation covers
- The specific situations where you lose the thread — and which of them technology can realistically help
- Styles that suit your hearing loss, ear anatomy, dexterity and preferences
- Technology levels, and honest guidance on where the extra cost is and is not worth it
- Rechargeable versus battery, connectivity and smartphone features
- Clear pricing, what is included in follow-up care, and what your insurance may or may not cover
You are not committing to anything by having the conversation. If the answer is that hearing aids are not warranted yet, we will say so and recommend when to recheck.
Already wear hearing aids?
We see plenty of patients who bought devices elsewhere and want a second opinion, a reprogramming against current test results, or simply someone local to handle cleanings and repairs. Bring what you have.
The process
From first conversation to long-term support
Getting hearing aids is not a transaction — it is a sequence of appointments, each with a purpose.
Hearing evaluation
Everything starts with measurement. We need to know the degree and configuration of your hearing loss, and how clearly you understand speech, before any device conversation is meaningful.
Consultation and technology selection
We discuss where you struggle — meetings, restaurants, the car, the phone, a place of worship — and match that against styles and technology levels. You get clear pricing and a clear recommendation.
Fitting and programming
Devices are programmed to your audiogram using established prescriptive targets, then checked on your ears for physical comfort, feedback and sound quality with you listening in real time.
Orientation and handling
Inserting, removing, charging, cleaning, changing filters, pairing with a phone, using the app. We would rather spend the time now than have devices sit in a drawer.
Follow-up adjustments
Your brain adapts over the first weeks, and first impressions change. Follow-up visits are where the settings get refined based on what you actually experienced, not what was predicted.
Ongoing care
Cleanings, wax guard changes, repairs, reprogramming when your hearing changes, and periodic rechecks. This is the part that determines whether devices still work well in year four.
Choosing technology
What actually differs between technology levels
Manufacturers typically offer the same physical device at several technology tiers. The difference is rarely loudness — it is how well the device handles complexity.
- Quiet, one-on-one listening. Most technology levels handle this well. If this is the bulk of your listening, a higher tier may not be money well spent.
- Background noise and groups. This is where higher technology levels generally aim to help, through directional microphones and more sophisticated noise management.
- Changing environments. If your day moves between the car, meetings, restaurants and the street, automatic adaptation matters more.
- Connectivity. Streaming calls, television or audio directly to your hearing aids can matter more to daily satisfaction than a tier upgrade.
Our job at the consultation is to tell you where the extra money makes a real difference for your listening life — and where it does not.
Realistic expectations
What hearing aids can and cannot do
Being straight about this up front is what makes people successful with hearing aids.
What they generally help with
- Making speech audible again across the pitches you have lost
- Reducing the effort of following conversation
- Reconnecting you to soft environmental sounds you had stopped noticing
- Improving comfort on the phone and with television, particularly with streaming
What they cannot do
- Restore normal hearing — they are an aid, not a repair
- Fully separate one voice from a loud, crowded room
- Work well without adjustment time — adaptation takes weeks, not minutes
- Compensate indefinitely without maintenance and periodic reprogramming
Outcomes vary between individuals and depend on the nature of the hearing loss, speech understanding ability, listening environments and consistency of use. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of a particular result.
Questions
Hearing aid FAQs
How do I know if I need hearing aids?
The honest answer is that a hearing evaluation tells you. Hearing aids are generally considered when testing shows a hearing loss that is affecting your ability to follow conversation and is not something a physician can treat medically. The decision also depends on how much difficulty you are actually having day to day — two people with similar audiograms can reasonably reach different conclusions.
Are hearing aids the same as the ones sold online or over the counter?
They are not the same process. Devices bought without testing are set from your own estimate of your hearing. A hearing aid fitted by an audiologist is programmed to a measured audiogram, checked for physical fit, and adjusted over follow-up visits. If you already own over-the-counter devices, bring them in — we are happy to look at what you have and discuss whether they are set up sensibly for your hearing.
What styles of hearing aids are available?
Broadly, hearing aids either sit behind the ear with a thin wire or tube into the canal, or sit within the ear itself in various sizes. Which styles are appropriate for you depends on your audiogram, the size and shape of your ear canals, your dexterity and your preferences around visibility, battery type and connectivity. We will go through the realistic options for your hearing at your consultation.
Can hearing aids help with conversations in noisy places?
Noisy rooms are the hardest listening situation for any hearing aid, and expectations should be realistic — no device restores normal hearing in a crowded restaurant. That said, modern hearing aids include directional microphones and noise-management features intended to make speech easier to follow in background noise, and where noise is your main difficulty, we will factor that heavily into what we recommend, including assistive listening options like a remote microphone.
Which hearing aid brands do you carry?
[MANUFACTURERS / BRANDS CARRIED — to be supplied by the practice] Please call the office and we will tell you exactly what we work with and why.
How much do hearing aids cost?
[PRICING AND PAYMENT OPTIONS — to be supplied by the practice] Cost depends on technology level and what is included in the care package. We will give you clear pricing in writing at your consultation, before any commitment.
Does insurance cover hearing aids?
[INSURANCE INFORMATION — plans accepted, out-of-network policy, and benefit-verification process to be provided by the practice]
Coverage for hearing aids varies considerably between plans, and some plans cover testing but not devices. Call our office with your plan details and we will tell you what we can verify.
How long do hearing aids last?
Hearing aids are worn daily in a warm, humid environment, so lifespan depends heavily on maintenance and on how your hearing changes over time. Regular cleaning, prompt repairs and periodic reprogramming against a current audiogram all extend useful life.
