Hearing Aid Consultations & Fittings in Great Neck, NY
Hearing aids should be fitted to your ears and your hearing — measured, programmed, verified and refined — rather than set to a default and handed over.
Two appointments, two different jobs
A consultation is where the decision gets made: what you are struggling with, what technology can realistically do about it, which styles suit your ears and your hands, and what it costs. Nothing is fitted that day and nothing is assumed.
A fitting is where the device becomes yours. It is programmed to your audiogram, checked physically on your ears, adjusted while you listen, and taught to you — inserting, cleaning, charging, connecting. Then it is followed up, because how a hearing aid sounds in a quiet office is not how it sounds in your kitchen on a Tuesday.
What we need before a fitting
Current test results. If you have not been tested recently, we will start with a comprehensive hearing evaluation — the audiogram is the prescription, and a fitting without one is a guess.
Bring a second set of ears
A spouse, adult child or close friend is genuinely useful at both appointments. They will hear the instructions with you, and they usually have a clearer view than you do of which situations have become difficult.
Devices bought elsewhere
If you already own hearing aids and want them re-checked, reprogrammed or serviced, we are glad to look. Bring the devices, chargers, apps and any paperwork. See hearing aid repairs for what we can handle in the office.
The fitting appointment
What we do at your fitting
A fitting is a clinical appointment, not a handover. Most of it happens with the devices on your ears and you telling us what you hear.
Programming to your prescription
Devices are set using your audiogram and established prescriptive targets — the starting point is your measured hearing, not a generic profile.
Physical fit
We check comfort, retention and seal. A device that hurts after two hours or whistles when you chew will not be worn, however well it is programmed.
Verification and fine-tuning
We check that the output is appropriate for your loss and comfortable at loud levels, and refine the settings with you listening and responding in the room.
Feedback and comfort checks
Whistling, occlusion and your own voice sounding boomy are all addressable. We look for them deliberately rather than waiting for you to discover them at home.
Handling and daily care
Inserting and removing, charging or battery changes, cleaning, wax guards, drying, and phone pairing where applicable — practised with you, not just explained.
Follow-up scheduled
You leave with a next appointment booked. The first weeks generate the information that makes the second set of adjustments genuinely useful.
Why programming matters
The same device, set two ways, is two different devices
Amplification is not a single volume control. A hearing aid applies different amounts of gain at different pitches and at different input levels — soft speech needs more help than loud speech, and the pitches you have lost need more than the ones you have not.
Getting that shape right is the whole job. Set too conservatively, devices feel like they are doing nothing and end up in a drawer. Set too aggressively, everything is sharp and tiring and they end up in the same drawer.
This is also why devices should be re-checked over time. Hearing changes, and a prescription based on a five-year-old audiogram is a five-year-old prescription. An annual hearing exam keeps the two aligned.
Questions
Consultation & fitting FAQs
What happens at a hearing aid fitting?
Your devices are programmed to your audiogram, physically fitted and checked on your ears, and then adjusted while you listen and give feedback. We also cover the practical side — inserting and removing them, charging or changing batteries, cleaning, and pairing with your phone if the devices support it. You leave wearing them, with a follow-up appointment already scheduled.
How long does a fitting appointment take?
Longer than most people expect, because the handling and orientation portion matters as much as the programming. Bring a family member if you would like a second person hearing the instructions.
Will hearing aids sound normal straight away?
Usually not, and that is expected. If you have been missing high-frequency sound for years, restoring it initially sounds sharp or bright — your own voice, dishes, paper, footsteps. Most people adapt over a few weeks of consistent daily wear. That is exactly why follow-up appointments exist.
Can you adjust hearing aids I already own?
In many cases, yes, depending on the manufacturer and whether the devices can be accessed with our programming software. Bring the devices and any accessories, chargers or paperwork you have, and we will tell you what is possible. Current hearing test results — or a fresh evaluation — are needed to reprogram them properly.
How many follow-up visits will I need?
It varies. Some people settle quickly; others need several rounds of fine-tuning as they encounter different environments. What matters is that adjustments happen based on your real experience rather than being left to a default setting.
What if I cannot get used to them?
Tell us early rather than persevering in silence. Most adaptation problems have a cause we can identify — physical fit, a setting that is too bright, feedback, occlusion, or unrealistic expectations for a particular environment. [TRIAL PERIOD AND RETURN POLICY — to be supplied by the practice]
